For programmers who feel the OpenSCAD language syntax is awful - I get it, but really it isn't the end of the world (not everything needs to have a Python or a C based syntax). I would say that OpenSCAD is a strong alternative (even a better choice) for anything but the most complex designs (OpenSCAD is extremely slow to render complex designs). I get that Fusion 360 has a lot of love for functional designs but its licensing model and cloud-linkage suck. I know building a 3D model entirely in script/code seems daunting, but for simple designs it is not very difficult or time consuming - especially, the easy with which you can refine the models makes for overall time savings during design. Models built with OpenSCAD can be refined easily since everything is within the script. If you generally enjoy scripting/programming, using OpenSCAD to build functional models via code seems like a far better approach than FreeCAD/TinkerCAD/Blender. This OpenSCAD book starts by taking you through the 3D printing technology, the software used for designing your objects, and an analysis of the G-code produced. So I dabbled with OpenSCAD a few times in the past but recently took half a day to learn it well and it has proved very worthwhile.
